The formulas that make up fragrances are considered trade secrets and ingredients that make up the fragrance portion of the product are not revealed on labels. However fragrance is increasingly cited as a trigger in health conditions such as asthma, allergies and migraine headaches. In addition, some fragrance materials have been found to accumulate in adipose tissue and are present in breast milk. Other materials are suspected of being hormone disruptors. A summary of the effects of fragrance on health by Betty Bridges reveals how fragrance enters the body through the skin as well as inhalation. The cumulative effects of fragrances cause more irritants than single chemicals, which is a concern since almost every manufactured product contains some form of perfume or masking fragrance. News UpdateBenefits The Department of Work and Pensions have issued a document to answer frequently asked questions about the new Personal Independence Payment. This is a new benefit to help disabled people live full, Good News Last night, the government was defeated in the Lords on three votes in succession. The welfare reform bill was amended so that ESA in youth will not be axed, many cancer patients will continue to be exempt from the work capability assessment and contribution-based ESA for claimants in the work-related activity group will be paid for two years instead of just one. Unfortunately after most peers had gone home last night, Lord Freud succeeded in sabotaging the reinstatement of ESA in youth by limiting it to current claimants only. The vote this coming Tuesday will be on axing DLA and replacing it with personal independence payment (PIP - see above). However the government now seem to be claiming that although disability organisations aren’t in favour of PIP, the majority of individuals who responded to the consultation were. Please consider signing this petition now to prove this is not true: You can add your name to the petition here. And if you have read about PIP and can explain concrete ways in which you personally would be disadvantaged, please email the cross bench peers to explain that. If you responded to the original DLA consultation in December 2010 tell them that too. There’s alist of crossbench peers here with links to their email addresses.
